Letterpress Printed Greeting Card
Learn the art of letterpress printing while creating your own hand-printed greeting cards! In this workshop, you’ll explore some of the fundamentals of traditional letterpress: designing a composition with antique wood and metal type, setting that type by hand, and pulling prints on a Vandercook printing press. You’ll leave with a beautiful set of cards, perfect for sharing or keeping as art.
Introduction to Letterpress Printing
Learn the basics of traditional letterpress while creating your own custom poster! In this hands-on workshop, you will set type, ink a proofing Vandercook press, explore layout and color, and print a small edition to take home. No prior experience is needed. Just come ready to experiment and get a little inky!
Basic Pamphlet Binding + Hardcover
In this workshop participants will be introduced to basic bookbinding techniques that use the pamphlet as their foundation. Following a short series of basic exercises and demos, the workshop will culminate in the making of a hardcover book of the participant’s own design!
Letterpress and Linocu
This workshop will teach participants to hand set type on a Vandercook proofing press to compose text to go alongside ornament, image cuts, or your own carved linoblock! Learn to operate the co-ops proofing press, explore their collection of type and printer cuts, and learn the basics of carving a mounted linoblock. Combine these methods and you can create flyers, bookplates, cards, and more... in multiples!
Experimental Typographic Printing
This 4-hour workshop invites participants to explore the experimental typographic techniques of Dutch artist H.N. Werkman (1882–1945). Werkman, a WWII-era printer and member of the avant-garde group ‘De Ploeg,’ created his radical ‘druksels’ by inking block letters directly and stamping them onto paper.
Introduction to Linocut
Workshop participants will cut and print a small linoleum cut relief print. Bring ideas, objects or images to create a drawing to trace and transfer to a linoleum block. Participants will learn a variety of mark-making approaches with relief tools, culminating in a small linoleum cut print.
Introduction to Silkscreen
This workshop will be a fun and easy way to get introduced to the basics of screenprinting. Participants will learn how to create colorful images using a variety of stencil techniques on the screen, including hand drawn, paper stencils, and light sensitive emulsion for both photo transparencies and hand-drawn transparencies. Attention will also be given to more painterly methods of image development with monoprinting.
Exploring Encaustic Monotyp
Creating encaustic monoprints is a fun and experimental medium, and the flexibility of working with a hotbox and paint sticks can really encourage creativity. The quick and flexible nature of encaustic monotypes encourages participants to push boundaries and discover unique outcomes. During the workshops, participants can expect to focus on layering color and creating or using stencils.
Drawing in Intaglio: An Introduction to Etching and Drypoint
If you love drawing and printmaking and want a little bit of both, this is the class for you! During this workshop, participants will learn how to create an etching, while receiving individual drawing instruction in an atelier format. We will focus on perceptual drawing endeavors, while embracing how intaglio transforms or pivots our individual handwriting .Our focus will be hard-ground line etching and drypoint, although other techniques will be discussed.
Drypoint Monoprint Workshop -- An Introduction to Various Monoprinting Techniques!
During this workshop, participants will create a series of 10-12 Drypoint Monoprints using a single plate to produce images in black, white, and color.
Attendees will participate in the entire intaglio process: Setting up and preparing a plate/paper, incising an image onto the plate, and creating a fully-wiped intaglio inked proof and print (black ink). Subsequent prints in the series will include color manipulations.
LEGO Letterpress
In this letterpress workshop we will explore the modern, explorative method of printing using Lego tiles on both antique letterpress printing presses and Provisional Presses. The workshop will cover basic Vandercook printing press use and safety, working to make materials type high and printable, modular image creation, and basic print editioning. We will end the day with a class-wide print swap.
(Full) ARTIST BOOKS – Structures and Creative Mix
This is a one-day workshop offering a few basic book binding techniques. Participants will creatively explore integrating prints of all types into a unique artist book structure.
Morning projects include measuring, cutting, folding, sewing basic 3-hole pamphlet followed by dual pamphlet book structure onto an end-paper and attaching covers. Afternoon project involves precise folding of a concertina spine and repurposing a mix of prints into a reimagined narrative, finishing with a hard cover.
SUN PRINTING - An introduction to Cyanotype
During this workshop, participants will be creating images with the sun! It is definitely a process for those who like to experiment with constructing an image through assemblage. Participants will create composition layouts with various materials, including pressed plants and flowers, patterns, and Mylar drawings.
